چکیده

We claim that ideas of etiquette can be expanded and utilized to facilitate, inform, and predict human-computer interaction and perceptions. By expanding on the qualitative model of etiquette proposed by Brown and Levinson we created a quantitative, computational model of etiquette that allows a machine to interpret and display politeness. This model was then embedded into a testbed and a series of experiments involving human task performance were completed to test various hypotheses related to the model. Relevant compliance data (e.g., accuracy, response time, attitudes, etc.) were obtained as dependent variables. The results show that the variables included in our model have important effects on subjects’ decision making and performance in our experimental tasks. The results also demonstrate that variations in etiquette can result in objective, measurable consequences in human+machine performance.

Culture, Politeness and Directive Compliance: Does Saying “Please” Make a Difference?

We argue that traditional cultural factors (from Hofstede, Nisbett, etc.) are too abstract to provide good, predictive models of important human performance behaviours such as compliance with directives. Instead, we focus on culture-specific social interaction behaviours in language, gesture, etc. (i.e., "etiquette") as a more concrete and quantifiable bridge between abstract cultural factors a...

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition

With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

Etiquette in Human Computer Interactions: What Does it Mean for a Computer to be Polite? Or Who Needs Polite Computers Anyway?

We define Human-computer interaction (HCI) etiquette rules as a type of software design guideline aimed at facilitating smooth and effective interactions between humans and computers. They do so, by insuring that the software follows expected rules of interaction appropriate to the computer’s role in a team. In particular, HCI etiquette rules from the cultural conventions of a particular group....

Design and development of ShrewdShoe, a smart pressure sensitive wearable platform

This study introduces a wearable in-shoe system for real-time monitoring and measurement of the plantar pressure distribution of the foot using eleven sensing elements. The sensing elements utilized in ShrewdShoe have been designed in an innovative way, they are based on a barometric pressure sensor covered with a silicon coating. The presented sensing element has great linearity up to 300...
